Choose the safari experience that suits you best
Gypsy Safari is the most preferred and popular safari option in Jim Corbett National Park. It is conducted in an open 4x4 Gypsy vehicle that is specially designed for jungle terrain. The vehicle allows tourists to travel through narrow forest tracks and deep areas of the park where wildlife sightings are more likely.
A Gypsy safari can accommodate up to six tourists per vehicle, along with a trained driver and an experienced forest guide. Because the group size is small, the safari feels more personal and comfortable. Tourists can enjoy uninterrupted views of the forest and take better photographs of wildlife and landscapes.
Gypsy safaris operate in several tourism zones of Jim Corbett such as Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Durga Devi, Garjia, and Dhikala (for visitors staying overnight in the Dhikala forest lodge). These zones are known for their diverse habitats including dense forests, riverbeds, and open grasslands that support a wide variety of animals and birds.
During the safari, visitors may spot wildlife such as the Bengal tiger, Asian elephants, deer species like spotted deer and sambar, wild boars, crocodiles, and many species of birds. The smaller size and flexibility of the Gypsy vehicle allow it to stop quietly near wildlife, increasing the chances of good sightings.
Gypsy safaris are available in two time slots – morning safari and evening safari. Each safari usually lasts around 3 hours, giving visitors enough time to explore the jungle and experience the beauty of the park.
Canter Safari is another popular safari option for tourists visiting Jim Corbett National Park. It is conducted in a large open bus called a canter, which is specially modified for jungle safaris. The canter vehicle is bigger than a Gypsy and can accommodate 16 tourists at a time, along with a driver and a guide.
Canter safaris are mainly operated in the Dhikala zone, which is considered the core and most scenic zone of Jim Corbett National Park. Dhikala is famous for its vast grasslands, dense forests, and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Many visitors choose the canter safari because it allows them to explore this famous zone even if they are not staying overnight inside the forest.
The duration of a canter safari is usually about 4 hours, providing a long and immersive jungle experience. During the safari, visitors travel through forest roads, riverbeds, and grassland areas where wildlife sightings are common.
Although the canter safari carries more passengers and may feel less private than a Gypsy safari, it is a great option for budget travelers, solo tourists, or larger groups who want to experience the wildlife of Jim Corbett.
Explore Corbett National Park
Corbett Park is divided into 8 tourist zones, where tourists can enjoy safaris
The Dhikala Zone is the most renowned and breathtaking safari zone of Jim Corbett National Park, offering an unmatched wildlife experience. Known as the park’s largest tourism zone, Dhikala is celebrated worldwide for its thrilling tiger sightings, rich biodiversity, and stunning landscapes. A trip here is more than just a safari – it’s a journey into the untouched wilderness of Corbett.
The Bijrani Zone of Jim Corbett National Park is one of the most popular safari zones, admired for its diverse wildlife, picturesque landscapes, and thrilling safari experiences. Located close to Ramnagar, this zone is easily accessible and highly recommended for tourists who want to enjoy a mix of dense forest, grasslands, and open safari trails.
The Jhirna Zone of Jim Corbett National Park is a favorite among wildlife lovers for its open landscapes, diverse fauna, and unique advantage of being open throughout the year. Unlike other zones, Jhirna welcomes visitors even during the monsoon, making it a perfect choice for those who want to experience the jungle in all seasons.
The Dhela Zone is one of the newest tourism zones of Jim Corbett National Park, opened for visitors in 2014. Despite being relatively new, Dhela has quickly gained popularity for its rich biodiversity, tranquil forest atmosphere, and high chances of wildlife encounters. Its unique charm lies in its mix of dense sal forests, grasslands, and water bodies, making it a paradise for both wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
The Durga Devi Zone of Jim Corbett National Park is a paradise for adventure lovers, birdwatchers, and those who wish to explore the raw, untouched beauty of the Himalayan foothills. Known for its hilly terrain, dense forests, and flowing rivers, this zone offers a unique safari experience quite different from the grasslands of Dhikala or the plains of Bijrani.
The Garjiya Zone is one of the most popular safari zones of Jim Corbett National Park, offering visitors a perfect balance of wildlife adventure and natural beauty. Opened for tourists in recent years, Garjiya has quickly gained recognition for its excellent safari trails, high chances of tiger sightings, and accessibility from Ramnagar.
The Phato Zone is the newest addition to the safari tourism zones of Jim Corbett National Park, inaugurated in December 2021. Spread across the Ramnagar Forest Division, Phato has quickly gained popularity among tourists for its unspoiled beauty, eco-tourism focus, and excellent wildlife sightings.
The Sitabani Buffer Zone of Jim Corbett National Park is unlike any other safari zone. Known for its mythological significance, serene landscapes, and abundant wildlife, Sitabani is a favorite among those who want to experience the jungle away from the busier core zones.
