Nainital: After completing the first phase of tiger translocation from Corbett National Park to Uttarakhand’s Rajaji Tiger Reserve, authorities are now preparing to launch the programme’s second phase. The first phase was conducted in 2020, when five tigers—two males and three females—were relocated to Rajaji.
For the second phase, one male and four female tigers will be translocated after receiving approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
“We have received permission from the NTCA for the second phase. Under this phase, one male and four female tigers will be translocated from Corbett to Rajaji,” said Saket Badola, Director, Corbett Tiger Reserve.
“Preparations have already started here. The process will be conducted gradually as the tigers are captured and arrangements are made at Rajaji to receive them,” he added.
The tigers will be identified from areas experiencing increasing human-wildlife conflict, especially locations situated close to human settlements.
“These tigers are being relocated from areas facing human-wildlife conflict or from places near human settlements where the risk could increase. This will help relocate the tigers to other suitable areas while also reducing human-wildlife conflict,” Badola said.
The second phase aims to strengthen tiger conservation, improve the species’ distribution and reduce the chances of human-wildlife conflict.
