Rare Elephant Twins Capture Attention in Corbett Tiger Reserve

Rare Elephant Twins Capture Attention in Corbett Tiger Reserve

DEHRADUN: In a rare and remarkable wildlife event, a female elephant has given birth to healthy twin calves in the Garjiya tourism zone of Corbett National Park. The unusual occurrence has attracted widespread attention from wildlife experts, forest officials, and nature enthusiasts across the country.

The mother elephant and her two calves were recently spotted during a jungle safari by noted wildlife enthusiast Sanjay Chimwal, who managed to capture the rare sighting on video. Since being shared online, the footage has gone viral, with experts calling it a strong indication of the region’s thriving and healthy ecosystem.

Dr. Saket Badola, Director of Corbett Tiger Reserve, described the successful birth as a reflection of the strength and stability of the Corbett landscape.

“The Corbett National Park and the wider Shivalik Elephant Reserve are extremely important for the conservation and long-term survival of elephants,” Dr. Badola said while speaking to TNIE. “The Corbett landscape in Uttarakhand supports a significant elephant population, with more than 1,200 elephants recorded in the region. The birth of twin calves is a highly positive sign of a safe and healthy wildlife habitat.”

He further explained the biological rarity of the event, noting that elephants generally have a gestation period of around 22 to 24 months. “After such a long developmental period, the birth of twins is extremely uncommon. Usually, elephants give birth to only one calf, which makes both the birth and survival of twins a very rare phenomenon,” he added.

According to wildlife experts, twin births in elephants occur in less than one percent of pregnancies, with estimates usually ranging between 0.5 and 1 percent.

Wildlife expert and former deputy director of the state forest department, Ranganath Pandey, who has extensively studied wild elephants, highlighted the importance of the event. He explained that while twin births are statistically rare, the real challenge lies in the survival of both calves.

“In the wild, raising twin calves is biologically demanding for the mother elephant,” Pandey said. “Elephants have long gestation periods and require a large amount of nutrition to produce milk. Caring for two calves at the same time puts enormous nutritional pressure on the mother.”

Wildlife enthusiast Deepankar Khulbe also described the sighting as both challenging and inspiring, stating that successfully carrying and nurturing twin calves after a two-year pregnancy is an extraordinary achievement in the wild.

Following the sighting, tourist interest in the Garjiya tourism zone has increased significantly. Local safari operators have witnessed an increase in bookings from tourists eager to spot the rare elephant family. However, forest officials are prioritizing the safety and comfort of the mother and calves by ensuring they have enough space and minimal human disturbance.

Conservationists believe the event reflects the success of habitat protection efforts in Corbett National Park. By maintaining secure forest areas, ensuring sufficient food resources, and preserving a stable environment, the reserve continues to support one of India’s most important elephant populations.

Interestingly, this sighting follows similar reports of twin elephant births in Madhya Pradesh’s Panna Tiger Reserve, once again proving that nature continues to amaze even seasoned wildlife experts. For now, Corbett’s twin elephant calves are being seen as a hopeful and encouraging sign for the future of elephant conservation in the region.
